the apprentice sidequest unlocks after freeing the golden condor. for this quest, we must visit bamboo village about 45 times, but only four specific events determine whether we obtain one of the secret rewards, a mastersword+30. we first meet the blacksmith's apprentice in bamboo village, back when we were supposed to save the golden condor. while the apprentice does nothing significant in the snes game, she does have more of a backstory in the ds remake here in the smith's workshop in bamboo village,

the apprentice with her master on the lower right. he'll upgrade your weapon for 1000 gitans, but he has no unique dialogue during this entire quest. the apprentice appears to lack confidence. cold, her master is not one for casual conversation, which certainly does not reassure the apprentice of her position. it's up to us to cheer her on. we should note that not all of the 40-some runs are unique. half of the time, she will discuss the weather or tell us to pack food for our journey. in the other half, we learn about the apprentice's backstory, goals, and insecurities

for instance, the eighth run introduces the first multiple choice question. choosing the first option improves how the apprentice feels about us, which affects the final result of this quest. fortunately, we are not playing a dating sim. in each run, we should speak with the old man and the little girl. in the house adjacent to the smithy, these two describe interactions between the apprentice and her master that we won't see when we leave the village. also, in the latter part of the quest, talking to the old man is mandatory.

the 14th run is crucial. only asking her to show her hand is the wrong answer. it's rude and domineering. that's because we also need to chuck herbs at her. a restorative herb costs only 600 gitans. we lose more money in the many deaths in this game. we also could have thrown a medicinal herb at her, but it would not have been as effective. it's impossible to screw up this quest, although one of the rewards can be missed.

for now, we seem to be on the correct path. the apprentice appears to be improving her skill and confidence, but it is easy to lose track of the bigger picture. she sounds ready to forge her own weapons now. for some reason, she can't upgrade a cudgel, probably because it is primarily made of wood. a polearm or better is required. we should be happy for her, but it's about time to say goodbye. let's get hitched at vegas. actually, she'll blush if we choose that option. instead, our advice must be consistent with our previous answers.

if we made the right chioces, the apprentice leaves behind a special present. but it also took about 30 runs to get the mastersword. we could have upgraded one manually. wanderers can't be choosers, though. at this phase of the quest, we will be reading multiple letters from the apprentice. someone saw shiren near her home village... perhaps she is referring to another game. shiren has appeared in more than seven titles. the five in the main series, two on game boy,

and multiple ones on mobile. the life of a wanderer is a solitary life. shiren tends not to do so well with the opposite sex. oryu, the apprentice, asuka princess ateka from ds2, and others... our final reward is the return of the apprentice. on rare occasions, she'll appear in bamboo village and upgrade our weapon for free, but she can't upgrade weapons to the next form. so no katana to firebrand.
